Thanks and congratulations to Jen for being our December 2018 Volunteer of the Month! Jen has been volunteering with us for more than two and a half years. How did you hear about Inspiration Corporation?

I attended a small fundraiser I had learned about on Facebook. I heard a former client’s personal story and was inspired to get involved.

What is the most enjoyable part of volunteering for you?

I love starting my day by serving in the Cafe. It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to help someone start their day off with a good meal.

What is your volunteer background?

Service is a huge part of my life. For years I volunteered at a senior home with their weekly bingo program, I currently participate in Best Buddies Illinois, serve on the Board of Directors for St. Joseph Services, and try to volunteer at Inspiration twice a month as a breakfast server. I serve as a staff mentor for DePaul Service Immersion Trips too.

Why do you volunteer?

It is an honor to be part of such a wonderful program that provides basic needs for our

Describe one of the most interesting experiences you’ve had as a volunteer.

One morning at the end of meal service, one of the participants thanked me for being kind. I was struck by the fact that being treated with kindness was apparently an infrequent event that he went out of his way to say thank you for it. It was a good reminder to always be kind to everyone I meet because you never know how much someone needs a little kindness in their day!

What are your hobbies, besides volunteering?

I love to make art, travel, bike, yoga, and go to concerts around the city – but really service is my favorite way to spend my time!

What have you learned from your volunteer experience?

That the volunteers, staff, and participants are all neighbors and part of the same community.
