Congratulations to Beth R., our February 2016 Volunteer of the Month! Beth is a previous participant of Inspiration Corporation who decided last June to give back through our volunteer program, and we’re so happy to have her on our team!

We are very proud to have Beth as part of the Inspiration Corporation community – here’s what she said about her experience volunteering with us:

How did you hear about Inspiration Corporation?

I used to be a client of Inspiration Corporation. I graduated from the Employment Services program at Inspiration.

What is the most enjoyable part of volunteering for you?

I like talking with the clients about their experiences. They have some great stories. I always try to give them words of encouragement in regards to finding housing and work. I am always happy to hear when someone tells me they just got housed or found a job. I understand their challenges because I have lived them myself.

What is your volunteer background?

Beth volunteers regularly as a server in our Meals Program.

Beth volunteers regularly as a server in our Meals Program.

My first volunteer experience came when I was 10 years old. My late mother helped to found the First Domestic Violence Shelter in our town out in Northern California back in 1978. I used to work with the children staying at the shelter with their mothers. I now volunteer at my church. I also volunteer for the Alderman’s Office at community events. I volunteered at the Edgewater Art fair this past year.

Why do you volunteer?

I volunteer because I like to work with vulnerable populations. I also like to help those around me in any way I can. I believe that an increase in active volunteers leads to an increase in stronger communities. You meet some really awesome people out volunteering.

What are you hobbies, besides volunteering?

My hobbies are cooking, reading, hiking, and spending with my cat Gabriella, who is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside!

What have you learned from your volunteer experience?

I have developed more flexibility in my interactions with the people around me. I have also learned the importance of working with others to meet challenges in more positive as well as in more productive ways. Many of life’s difficulties arise when these elements disappear from the equation. We should all strive for happiness in our daily lives so we can be more effective as well as useful in the world around us.
