In 2013, Inspiration Corporation took ownership of its first apartment building.
The eight-unit building located at 5840 South Martin Luther King Drive provides four affordably priced apartments for low-income families and four subsidized apartments for families experiencing homelessness who will also receive supportive services to help provide stability.
The building includes:
- six three-bedroom units
- one two-bedroom unit (accessible to people with disabilities)
- one one-bedroom unit (accessible to people with disabilities)
We also support more than 150 other households with rental subsidies and wraparound supportive services throughout Chicago
Increasing the number of units of supportive housing units for families is a priority of Inspiration Corporation’s 2011-2015 strategic plan. The shortage of affordable housing for families in Chicago combined with the fact that Washington Park has the highest rate of foreclosures in Chicago make this project both viable and desirable.
Communities Quality of Life Plan
This project contributes to Washington Park’s Local Initiatives Support Corporation New Communities Quality of Life Plan, supporting the goals of preserving housing along King Drive, preserving and rehabilitating quality rental housing, and embracing supportive housing as a tool to alleviate homelessness and dependency.
Ta’Sha first came to Inspiration Corporation through a referral from an emergency shelter where she had been staying with her nine children, whose ages range from one to twelve.
She told us, “Getting housing opened new doors, better doors, for me. It stopped me worrying.” After almost a year in her new home, Ta’Sha decided to enroll in our Foodservice Training Program and pursue employment in the culinary industry to help provide for her kids. Read more about her story here
